Cylcing and My Resting Heart Rate
April 3, 2007I just returned from the dentist this morning. Driven to go out of
necessity and years of neglect (I am an anti-dentite) a thourough exam
was done. So far, I really like the dentist I’m seeing. He seems
thoughtful, caring, and professional. He takes time to explain what he
is doing and ask and answer quesitons.
The office is really nice. Beautifully designed waiting area, clean,
looks high-tech. All of which aroused deep emotions within me as I
realized I’ll be helping to pay for all these things.
Anyway, back to my original point: When I went in for the exam they
hooked me up to a blood pressure monitor (which always makes me nervous
for some reason – fear of a medical person discovering high blood
pressure makes my blood pressure rise) and also a pulse rate monitor.
When she hooked up the device to monitor my pulse rate she looked at
it for a while waiting for it to kick into gear. Finally she realized
that it was working correctly and my resting pulse rate was moving
between 48 to 50 bpm. She said, “Wow, that’s great! Are you a runner?”
“No, but I do ride a bike,” I replied with great satisfaction.
The Doctor came in a few minutes later. He sat down and the first
thing he said was, “Man, your heart rate is really good! Do you run?”
“No I ride a bike.”
So here is a shout out to my Specialized road bike. You are worth
every penny I put into you. I promise you you will never cost me as
much as heart surgery would.
