Riding Up Mount Scott

The Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend I drove down to the Wichita Wildlife Refuge new Lawton, OK with my son Daniel and two of his friends, Travis and Nathan.  Our goal for the day was two-fold:  Ride about 60 miles and ride up Mount Scott.

The Self-Destruction of Floyd Landis

The Landis doping hearing is over. Now we wait the verdict from the three member panel. Sadly, it doesn’t matter at this point what they say. First, because no matter what they rule there will likely be an appeal. More importantly, because no matter what decision the panel makes Floyd Landis has imploded beyond repair.

SBC Exodus Resolution

Roger Moran and Dr. Bruce Shortt are going to submit a resolution at the upcoming 2007 Southern Baptist Convention that is sure to get a lot of media attention. Rick Scarborough and Voddie Baucham are said to be strongly endorsing this resolution. The resolution will be a call for SBC churches to encourage members to begin and exodus from the public school system and for the churches to start their own private schools. I assume it will be similar to this 2006 resolution.

Dang Rules!

How would you like to spend 85 hours on a stationary bike, believe you set the new Guinness World Record and then have it invalidated by some poor mathematical calculating?  That’s what happened to George Hood.  Hood is a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration supervisor who wanted to raise money for a group that helps families of police officers killed in the line of duty.  He also wanted to set a record, so he spent the better part of four days on a stationary bike.  He had around 40 volunteers keeping a log of his ride, which amounted to riding a bike 1,080 miles.  The group made some addition and subtraction errors and had trouble reading military time.  Scott Christie, the Guinness records manager, said they made “fundamental flaws” which invalidated the feat.

I’ve got to give Hood credit.  He doesn’t seem bitter about it although he admitted to some frustration.  George spent two days in the hospital afterwards, but is now planning another try.  He figures he spent a lot of time getting in shape and he wants to set a record and be published.  This summer he is shooting for a 101 hour ride.  Good luck George, I sincerely hope you do it.  You might want to have a serious training session for the people logging information for you this time around.

Oh yeah, kudos on raising almost $30,000 in the process.

The Bible Replaced by “An Inconvienient Truth”

A California hotel, the Gaia Napa Valley Hotel and Spa, is not putting Gideon Bibles in the nightstand drawers, but they are placing a copy of Al Gore’s book on the bureau.  I guess those who say environmentalism is becoming a religion are right.  Bloomberg.com has more of the story if you’re interested in the details of the hotel’s efforts at being “green.”
