The Sequoyah Eagles playoff game tonight (11/16/07). They were playing Kingfisher and game which the lost by the score of 7 – 3. I arrived late. I would like to say, “fashionably late” but I’m not sure what that means. I think it is just a lousy excuse for not showing up on time. I’ve never been fashionable about anything. During a November 6, 2007 IMB Executive Session a vote was taken to censure Wade Burleson, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Enid Oklahoma. You can read the IMB report here and the code of conduct for IMB trustees here. I like Wade and have always found him to be a gracious, polite and well-spoken. Obviously, Wade is a man who doesn’t mind stirring the pot if he believes it needs to be stirred. Read the rest of this entry ?

In my last post I tried to illustrate how unbelief is a reflection of our low view of God. Now, consider the flip side of this point. A few nights ago my wife and I were discussing some decisions we were considering. Some of those decisions involved some real risk. They would also require a degree of sacrifice and presented us with a level of uncertainty. Monica didn’t flinch at any of the ideas and seemed perfectly content with any direction we took. That surprised me somewhat and I expected some level of resistance. When I questioned her about the calm attitude she had about it all she said that she knew I would take care of things. When I asked her what made her so sure of that she said I had always come through in the past and she had no reason to doubt that I would in the future.
Well, I can honestly say it felt really good to know my wife had that much confidence in me. I felt like superman. I was ready at that moment to do anything for her. Suddenly I felt a great freedom to pursue everything God had for us. I told her I was blessed to have her as my wife. Not many husbands have such a trusting wife.
Apply this to our relationship with God: When we rest in God and trust in his goodness and his ability to work great things in and through our lives we bless him and honor him. I don’t know if it is a perfect analogy, but think of how you feel and are blessed when someone puts great trust and confidence in you and then imagine how it blesses God to know we trust him.
It really does honor God when his children trust him. It is like saying, “Father, I know you will come through. I will move forward into this uncertainty because I know you will never leave me nor forsake me. You can be counted on and I trust you.”

Raising four sons was not an easy task in many ways. It certainly was a financial challenge. There was a period of time when our boys would go through five gallons of milk a week. They could have used twice that if we had not placed limits on how much they could drink every day. During their growth spurts it seemed they could eat unlimited amounts of food. Their stomachs were bottomless pits. Read the rest of this entry ?

I want to take a few posts to write about trust.
The Scriptures use many words for faith. Words like believe, rely, and trust are somewhat synonymous but they each have their distinctive emphasis. Trust is my favorite because of its personal significance for me. My conversion experience came about because of that word trust. There was a time when trust wasn’t my experience with God. I was trusting in myself and my own good deeds to earn me a ticket to heaven some day. My conversion moment happened when I realized I had to stop trusting myself and trust Jesus Christ alone.
Why does God take trust so seriously? Next post….
